How we mahi
The Food Basket CHB is more than just a Food Rescue and Free-Store; it is a movement of manaakitanga, sustainability, and local kindness. Our philosophy is simple: what we get in, we share out. Our mission began with a vision to eliminate food insecurity in Central Hawke's Bay. A cornerstone of our work is Food for Families—a heart-warming, tummy-filling initiative born from the goodwill and energy of our dear friend, Julie. After identifying a real need for deeper food support in our district, Julie came to us with a vision to bridge the gap between surplus food and the people who need it most. Since then, hundreds of hearty, healthy meals have been exchanged, providing practical support and a sense of belonging to our neighbors.
Operating seven days a week, our dedicated team of volunteers works tirelessly to ensure no good food goes to waste:
-
Daily Rescue: we collect surplus food from local supermarkets and stores every single day.
-
Bulk Support: We receive and process bulk shipments of donated food throughout the week.
-
Home-Grown Heart: We proudly welcome donations of fresh, home-grown produce from our generous community members daily.
At The Food Basket CHB, everyone is welcome. We believe that by sharing our knowledge, skills, and surplus, we can create a stronger, more resilient Central Hawke's Bay.
